South Asia University in India

March 12, 2007

India is all set to have yet another educational institution of international caliber. It has been decided that the South Asia University will be setup at an Indian city. The exact location of the city is not yet known though it would be city where facilities for university, teachers, students, staff and their families would be available. This is said by Professor M. Asaduzzaman, chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh who returned from South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) meeting of University regulatory bodies from member countries.

The University will be bringing students from all SAARC countries irrespective of gender, caste, creed, disability, ethnicity or socio-economic background. All SAARC counties will recognize the first degree and postgraduate degree certificates that will be issued by the university.

The idea of setting up a world-class institution that is common for all SAARC countries is actually mooted by the Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh at the 13th SAARC Summit held in Dhaka, Bangla Desh in November 2005. The University would be run under the non-profit public-private partnership (PPP) model.
