REFORMS IN LEGAL EDUCATION

New Delhi: July 9, 2001


The Government has planned to amend the Advocates Act 1961 to bring about certain reforms in legal education and legal profession. At present the Law Commission of India is seized of the matter.

The Advocates Act 1961 has consolidated the law relating to legal practitioners. It also provides for constitution of State Bar Councils and the Bar Council of India. State Bar Councils mainly admit persons as advocates on their rolls and deal with cases of misconduct against lawyers. The Bar Council of India lays down the standard of professional conduct and etiquette for advocates.

The Bar Council of India also recognizes the law degrees of various universities. In this context it conducts visits and inspects Universities.
