Syllabus of Mysore University MSc Chemistry - Integrated - 5.2 Organic Chemistry – II

Active methylene compounds - 3 hours

Preparation and synthetic applications of malonic ester and ethyl acetoacetate, Keto-enol tautomerism in ethyl aceto acetate.

Carbohydrates - 7 hours

Classification with examples.

Monosaechandes: Reactions and structural elucidation of glucose and fructose (open chain and ring structure), Determination of ring size by methylation method.
Conversion reactions: Ascending (Killiani's synthesis), descending (Wohi's degradation), aldose to ketose and ketose to aldose, Epimerisation.
Disaccharides: Structural elucidation of sucrose, Structural formulae of maltose and lactose.
Polysaeeharides: Partial structural formulae of starch, cellulose and their uses.

Stereochemistry - 7 hours

Elements of symmetry, asymmetry and dissymmetry, Chiral carbon atom, cause of optical activity, enantiomers, diastereomers, Optical isomerism in tartaric acid and biphenyls, Racemisation, resolution, methods of resolution (Biochemical and chemical methods), Walden inversion, Asymmetric synthesis.
Geometrical isomerism: Designation of cis-trans and E-Z notations, (ieometrical isomerism of oximes, Beckmann rearrangement.

Amino acids, peptides, proteins and Nudeic acids - 3 hours

Classification, synthesis and reactions of amino acids, Isoelectric point in amino acids, synthesis of peptide by carbobenzoxy method, classification of proteins based on physical and physiological functions, primary and secondary structure of proteins.
Structural formulae of nucleosides and nucleotides, (RNA, DNA) and their importance.

2 hours

Oils and fats:

Analysis of oils and fats-determination of acid value saponification value, iodine value and their importance, merits and demerits of syndets in relation to soaps, Cleansing action of soaps.


Animal and plant waxes (one example each).

Natural pigments - 1 hour

Structural formulae and their importaice of anthocyanni, beta-carotene, haemoglobin.

Dyes - 3 hours

Colour and constitution, chromophore-auxochrome theory, Classification of dyes based on applications with examples, Synthesis of malachite green aid indigo, Structural elucidation of alizarin and its synthesis.

Terpenes - 3 hours

Classification, isolation, isoprene rule structural elucidation of citral aid its synthesis, Structural formulae of alpha-terpineol, camphor and menthol.

5 hours

Heterocyclic compounds:

Classification, synthesis of furan, thiophene, pyrrole, pyridine, indole, quinoline, isoquinoline, pyrimidine (one method each), Aromaticity and basicity of pyrrole and pyridine.

Uric acid:

Elucidation of structure and synthesis by Fischer's method, conversion of uric acid to purine and caffeine, Synthesis of guanine and theobromine.

Alkaloids - 3 hours

Definition, classification, isolation, Synthesis and structural elucidation of nicotine, Structural formulae of quinine, atropine, piperine, cocaine and morphine, Physiological importance of alkaloids.

Vitamins - 3 hours

Definition, classification, structural formulae, biological firnctions, deficiency diseases and synthesis of vitamins-A, C, B1, B2, B6, calciferol E and K.

Hormones - 2 hours

Definition, classification, synthesis of adrenaline, thyroxine, Structural formulae of estradiol, progesterone and testosterone and their importance. Peptide hormones - oxytocin and insulin - action, uses and side effects.

Polymers - 3 hours

Polymerization, types, synthetic rubbers: butyl rubber, Neoprene, Buna-S. Synthetic fibres: partial structural formulae of Nylon 6,10., saran, orIon, vinyan, synthetic plastics: thermoplastics and thermosetting resins, polystyrene, urea-farmaldehyde, polyurethane, phenol -farmaldehyde resins.

Insecticides - 3 hours

Fungicides and Hebicides:

Classification, synthetic organic insecticides and fungicides and their importance; aldrin, BIIC, Lindane, Malathion, Herbicides: Diuren, 2,4- D[2,4-dichlorophenoxy acetic acid] and their importance.
Wood protectants: Creosote oil, pental chloraphenols.
