CS10 : Software Engineering

1. (a) (a) Suppose you want to develop software for a Visitors Registration System for an office- Whenever a visitor wants to meet any staff member in the office, the system will record the name of the visitor, name of the staff, time of
entry, purpose of visit and time of exit. The system also should have the following features :
. To display the names of all visitors to a staff member daywise.
. To display the time spent by a particular visitor in the office.
. To display the names of all visitors who are in office at a particular time.
For the above mentioned system,
(i) develop a Systems Requirement Specifications.
(ii) design DFDs for 2 levels.
(iii) identify the software modules and their functions.
(iv) suggest a testing strategy for any one of the software modules proposed in (iii) above. (20)
(b) Develop a procedural design for a program that prints the distinct characters in its input strtng. Write two test cases for the procedure. (10)
2. (a) Explain four categories of software. Also, give an example of an application for each category. (6)
(b) What is the need of Re-engineering ? With the help of an example, explain the restructuring technique for re-engineering. How is reverse engineering different from re-engineeing ? (9)
3. (a) Explain the Waterfall model with an example. Write at least two disadvantages of the Waterfall model when compared with the Prototyping model. (9)
(b) Write three characteristics of an Agile Software process. Explain three human factors that affect an Agile Software process. (6)
4. (a) Write, and explain, the principle of function, oriented metrics, with the help of an example. Give three differences between function-oriented metrics and size-oriented metrics. (7)
(b) With the help of a diagram, explain the major activities in the Spiral Model. (5)
(c) Define a "Work-Product". How can you ensure that the Work Product is accurate ? (3)
5. (a) Explain the four steps of the "Requrrements Engineering Process". Take an example of an application and explain the steps involved in the Requirements Engineering Process. (8)
(b) Draw an E-R diagram for a Library Information System. Mention the assumptions made by you, if any. (7)
