SECTION A

1. Find the quartile deviation trom the following data :

2. If 2 percent of the books bound at a cerain bindery have defective bindings, use the Poisson approximation to the binomial distribution to determine the probability that five book of 400 book bound by this bindery, will have defective bindings.

3. Give some situations where the exponential distribution has been found useful. A highway petrol pump can serve on an average 15 cars per hour. What is the probability that for a particular car, the time taken will be less than 3 minutes ?

4. The coefficient of rank correlation of the mark obtained by 10 students in two particuiar subjects are found to be 0.5. lt was later discovered that the difference in ranks in two subjects obtained by one student was wrongly taken as 3 instead of 7. What should be the correct value of the coefficient of Rank correlation ?

5. An oil company claims that less than 20 percent of all car owners have not tried its gasoline. Test this claim at 0.01 level of significance, if a random check reveals that 22 of 200 car owners have not tried the oil company's gasoline.

SECTION B

7. In 16 one hour test runs, the gasoline consumption of a heavy duty engine averaged 16.4 gallons with a standard deviation of 2.1 gallons. Test the claim that the average gasoline consumption of this engine is 12.0 gallons per hour.

8. In a survey of population, it was found that 40% of the male population were illeterate. If the trend continues, work out the probability that out of a random sample of 2,00,000 male population, the number of Illiterates will be (i) less than 79,500 (ii) more than 80,500.
