MS8(S) Quantitative Analysis for Managerial Applications

SECTION A

1 . Explain the concept of a derivative. Discuss few applications of derivative in business.

2. The average salary of male employees in a firm was Rs. 520 (in thousands) and that of females Rs. 420 (in thousands). The mean salary of all the employees was Rs. 500 (in thousands). Find the percentage of male and female employees.

3. A consignment of 15 compact discs contains 4 defectives. The compad discs are selected at random, one by one, and examined. The ones examined are not put back. What is the probability that the ninth one examined is the last defective?

4. A random sample of 1000 workers from South India shows that their mean wages are Rs. 47 per day with a standard deviation of Rs. 28. A random sample of 1500 workers from North India gives a mean wage of Rs. 49 per day with a standard deviation of Rs. 40. Is there any significant difference between their mean level of wages?

5. The following figures show the distribution of digits in numbers chosen at random from a telephone directory.

Test whether the digits may be taken to occur equally frequently in the directory.

6. Write short notes on any three of the following:

(a) Identity matrix

7. The mean yield for a one-acre plot is 662 kgs with a standard deviation of 32 kgs. Assuming normal distribution, how many one-acre plots in a batch of 10,000 plots would expect yield

(a) over 700 kgs?

(b) below 750 kgs ?

8. Quotations of index numbers of equity share prices of a certain joint stock company and prices of preference share are given below:
