SECTION A

1. Distinguish between probability and non-probability sampling. Elucidate the reasons for the use of non-probability sampling in many situations in spite of its theoretical weaknesses.

2. The total cost, C(x), associated with producing and marketing x units of an item is given by C(x)=0.005x3 - 0.02x - 3ox + 3000

Find the total cost when output is 4 units and the marginal cost when output is 3 units.

5. An advertising firm is trying to determine the demographics for a new product. They have randomly selected 75 people in each of 5 different age-groups and introduced the product to them. The results are given below.

Suppose that the length of time (in hours) a Philips light bulb can stay ON before burning out is normally distributed with mean p and standard deviation 10. 12 Philips bulbs are selected at random and are run until they burn out, recording how long each one lasts. The mean of these 12 bulbs is 709.5 hours. Philips claims that its bulbs have a mean lifetime of at least 718 hours. State in terms of p the hypotheses you should test to investigate this claim.
