SECTION A
1. What are matrices? How are determinants different from matrices ? Discuss few applications of matrices in business.
2. An analysis of daily wages paid to workers in two firms A and B belonging the same industry gives the following to results :

(i) Which firm, A or B, has a larger wage bill ?

(iii) Calculate the average daily wage of all the workers In the firms A & B taken together.
3. If X is normally distributed and the mean of X is 12 and standard deviation is 4, find out the probability of the following :
(i) x ≥ 20
(ii) x ≤ 20
(iii) 0≤X≤12
4. Random samples drawn from two countries gave the following data relating to the heights of adult males :

7 . Two dice, one green and other red, arethrown. Let A be the event that the sum of points on the faces shown is odd, and B the event of at least one ace (number 1).
Find the probabilities of the events:

(iv) A|B
8. The ranks of same 16 students in Mathematics and Physics are as follows. Two numbers within brackets denote the ranks of the students in Mathematics and Physics.
(1, 1), (2, 10), (3, 3) , (4, 4), (5, 5) , (6, 7), (7, 2), (8, 6),(9, 8), (10, 11), (11, 15), (12, 9), (13 , 14), (14 , 12), (15, 16) (16, 13)
Calculate the rank correlation coefficient for proficiencies of this group in Mathematics and Physics.
