5. (a) A tensile specirnen with 12 mm diameter and gauge length of 60 cm reaches maximum tensile load at 98 kN and fractures at 7 4 kN. The minimum diameter at fracture is 9 mm. Determine the engineering stress at maximum load, true fracture stress, true strain at fracture and engineering strain

(b) Why does the engineering stress strain curve not give a true indication of the deformation characteristics of a rnaterial? (3)

6. (A) A power hammer is a forging press works. at a pressure of 65 x 10-6 Nmm-2. lt has a ram of mass 28 kg. The diameter of the ram cylinder is 620 mm and the ram falls from a height of 320 mm. Calculate the blow energy and velocity of ram at the start of deforrnation. (5)

(b) Differentiate between drawing and swaging. (3)

(c) Write applications of extrusion. (2)

7. (a) What is shearing process? Explain with the help of neat diagrarns. (5)

(b) What should be shear strength of an annealed steel sheet of 7 mm thickness on which 45 mm diameter hole is to be punched by applying a lorce of 3 0 kN ? (3)

8. (a) How are the cutting tools classified? Describe with the help of neat diagrams. (5)
