Maximum Marks: 75
Note : Question number 1 is compulsory. Answer any three questions from the rest.
June 2006
1. (a) Explain the detailed procedure for routing a packet in the TCP/IP network. Also, explain the use of 'gateway' and 'routing table' during the routing of a packet. (7)
(b) Identify the address class of the following IP addresses : (4)
(i) 191.102.052.002
(ii) 216.8.2.2
(iii) 72.6.2.0
(iv) 140.156.15.15
(c) What are the different types of IP address components ? Also, explain the different IP address classes and their formats.
(d) What are the two reasons for having layered architectures in the networking models ? How many layers are there in the TCP/IP model ? List any three functions of-each layer of theTCP/lP model. (9)
(e) Explain the IP subnet addressing, with the help of an example. (3)
(f) Write any two similarities between TCP/IP and OSI Reference Model. (2)
2. (a) Explain the importance of the following TCP header fields in network communication :
(i) Sequence number
(ii) Acknowledgement number
(iii) Window
(iv) Urgent pointer
(v) Option + Padding
(b) How much data can be carried within an IP datagram ? Also explain how IP datagrams are deleted from the network.
3. (a) Which transport layer protocol is appropriate for the following applications, and why ?
(i) Multicast communication
(ii) File transfer
(iii) Remote login
(iv) E-mail
(v) Voice packet
(b) Explain the retransmission and dispatch of a TCP segment on 10
(i) time-over, and
(ii) without any acknowledgement
Also draw a diagram for each case.
4. (a) Design an algorithm each for a UDP client and for a UDP server, where the client should prompt a user to enter two numbers, and send it to the server. The server should listen to the clients concurrently and print the sum of the given number with the client name on the screen.
(b) "Clients are often easier to build than a server and usually require no system privileges." Why ? Also explain the different special systeh privileges required for designing a server software. (5)
5. Write any three differences between each of the following pairs : 15
(i) TCP/IP and OSI model
(ii) Upward and Downward multiplexing
(iii) Gateway and Bridges
(iv) Connection oriented and Connectionless services
(v) Flow control at Data link layer and at Transport layer
