2. (a) Mention some of the syntactic and stylistic features that distinguish Indian English different from British English. 10
(b). What do you understand from 'native' and 'non - native' varieties of a language ? Briefly comment the use of English as a second and foreign language. 103. (a) What are the factors which bring about coherence in a text ? Mention briefly how coherence is different from cohesion.
(b) Explain briefly Grice's four maxims, giving examples to illustrate your answer. 10
4. (a)What are the difficulties caused by the spelling system of English ? How do phonetic symbols help us in resolving these difficulties ? Explain with a few examples. 10

(b) Identify the noun clause(s), adjective clause(s) and adverb clause(s) in the following senteuces. You must pick out five such clauses. 5
