1. Write short notes on any four of the following : 4x5:20

(i) Register

(ii) Stress Pattern in Indian English

(iii) Referential and emotive meaning

(iv) Free and Bound Morpherne

2. (a) Mention some of the syntactic and stylistic features that distinguish Indian English different from British English. 10

(b). What do you understand from 'native' and 'non - native' varieties of a language ? Briefly comment the use of English as a second and foreign language. 10

3. (a) What are the factors which bring about coherence in a text ? Mention briefly how coherence is different from cohesion.

(b) Explain briefly Grice's four maxims, giving examples to illustrate your answer. 10

4. (a)What are the difficulties caused by the spelling system of English ? How do phonetic symbols help us in resolving these difficulties ? Explain with a few examples. 10

(b) Which vowel sounds are represented by "ough" in the following words: 5

(i) bough

(ii) dough

(iii) through

(iv) cough

(v) tough

(c) Make a list of five pairs of words to distinguish between the sounds /I/ as in tick and /i:/ as in teak. 5

5. (a)Identify the inflectional and derivational suffixes in the following words : 5

(i) lovelier

(ii) friendliness

(iii) elephants

(iv) comfortably

(v) supportive

(b) Identify the noun clause(s), adjective clause(s) and adverb clause(s) in the following senteuces. You must pick out five such clauses. 5

(i) We do not know how many million years ago whales lived on land but we do know that they are one of the oldest groups of mammals.

(ii) She is looking for a place where she can stay in comfort but she does not know anyone who can help her in this.

(iii) When the bell rang, she was having her meal.

(c) Some of the sentences given below have errors. Write the correct version of the incorrect sentences. Also indicate which sentences are correct 5

(i) I wanted to find out why had they left the town in a hurry.

(ii) I look forward to seeing you soon.

(iii) They have been working here for 15th of December.

(iv) I'll wait for him till he doesn't come.

(v) They are coming to stay with us, isn't it ?

(d) Fill in the blanks with an appropriate phrasal verb from those given below. You may have to change the form of the verb. 5
