June, 2007
ET581F Mechanical Equiptment in Construction
Time: 3 hours
Maximum Marks: 100
1. (a) Whwt are the components of cycle time of a machine? How is the efficiency factor of a machine defined?
(b) How are draglines defined? What are the advantages and disadvantages of draglines? (2x5=10)
2. (a) What are trenchers, their utility and their types? What factors affect the production rates of trenchers?
(b) Explain the relative merits and demerits of crawler and. wheel based equipment. (2x5=10)
3. (a) Describe about concrete mixtures. What are the various types of concrete mixtures? Explain briefly about the drum type concrete mixfures.
(b) Why does the drilling pattern differ in surface and underground excavations? What factors affect the drilling pattern in surface works? (2x5=10)
4. (a) How would you select the type and size of a power shovel for a job?
(b) Distinguish between cableways and ropeways.
Describe the role of these two systems in handling
(i) raw materials for an aggregate crushing plant,
and
(ii) concrete for placement in a dam.(2x5=10)
5. (a) What are the different types of concrete buckets commonly used for conveying concrete?
(b) What are the different types of drilling jumbos used in tunnel construction? (2x5=10)
6. (a) What is the purpose of providing gates on spillways?
(b) Determine the number of passes requiired to compact 400m3 (compacted volume) of earth, with a roller at a speed of 6 km/hr, time of rolling 50 minutes, length of drum 4.0 m, number of drums 2, fraction of overlap 1/5, and a layer of thickness 0.5 m. (2x5=10)
7. A construction machine costs Rs. 85,000/- and has an
expected life of 5 5 years and salvage value of Rs. 5,000/-.
It is expected to work 2000 hours in a year. Compute the
yearly depreciation for the machine, using
(i) Straight line, and
(ii) Sum of the years-digit method. (10)
8. A 3 m3 re-handling type bucket is used to transfer sand from a stockpile into a hopper 10 m above the ground. The angle of swing is 90°. The average speed of hoist line is 3.6 km/hr. Determine the probable output per hour. (10)
Assume:Time per cycle (approx.)
Loading bucket = 9 sec
Dumping load = 9 sec
Swinging bucket to stockpile = 6 sec
Loss time, accelerating etc. = 6 sec
Unit operates : 48 minutes per hour
9. Determine the lifting capacity of a crawler crane, given the following data: (10)
Total weight of crane without boom (W) = 30 t
Total weight of boom and suppgrting tackle (B) = 5 t
Weight of load (P) = 1.5 t
Radius of lifting (R) = 10 m
Fulcrum distance (f) = 2.1 m
Distance of centre of gravity of machine from the centre
line of rotation (g) = 1.5 m
Distance of boom hinge from centre line of rotation (a) = 1.2 m
Assume : crawler cranes are rated at 75%
10. Write short notes on any five of the following: (5x2=10)
(a) Salvage value
(b) Fork lift truck
(c) Belt conveyor
(d) Elevator
(e) Ripper
(f) Rimpull
(g) Flapgate
(h) Aggregate cooling
