MPA001: Understanding Natural Disasters

Time: 2 hours
Maximum Marks: 50

Note: Answer any five questions in 400 words each from the following questions given in Section I and Section II, selecting atleast two questions out of each section. All questions carry equal marks.

SECTION I

1. Discuss the various types of natural disasters and highlight the specific efforts to mitigate diasters in India. (20)

2. Describe the nature of floods and differentiate between structural and non-structural measures of flood mitigation bringing out the significance of preparedness and response in disaster managememt. (10)

3. Discuss the different types of droughts and highlight its various causes. (10)

4. Write a note on the Orissa Supercyclone of 1999 and discuss the action taken by the Government. (10)

5. Describe various types of hazards and impacts associated with earthquakes and highlight the lessons learnt. (10)

SECTION II

6. Explain the classification and causes of landslides indicating the places where they could occur in India. (10)

7. Discuss the precautions to be exercised while moving through avalanche prone areas. (10)

8. Discuss the nature and causes of volcanic hazard and highlight its monitoring and mitigation (10)

9. Which areas are more prone to heat and cold waves in India? Discuss the preventive and preparedness measures that are mostly adopted for protection from heat and cold waves. (10)

10. Write a note on the impacts of global warming (10)
