To help in identification of fishing zones

The Andhra University (AU) has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS). It will help in identifying potential fishing zones, the MoU relates to training and research in selected and advanced thrust ares like science and technology with special reference to Earth and Ocean sciences, joint research and development programmes.
INCOIS Director Shalesh Nayak and AU Registrar P. Vijaya Prakash singed the MoU on Monday in the presence of the Vice Chancellor L. Venugopal Reddy and Mayor, P. Janardhana Rao. The Vice Chancellor said a research project had been taken up using remote sensing and geographic info system on validation of potential fishing zone advisories to pass on the information to the fishing community.
Speaking on the occasion Nayak said Tsunami Early Warning Centre system being set up at INCOIS at Hyderabad will be fully functional by the end of September. He added that that during the past one and half years, 28 earth quakes had been analyzed by the Centre to detect whether they could trigger a tsunami. The Director for Centre for Studies on Bay of Bengal, P. Rajendraprasad said that two years staff, research scholars and students prepared nearly 500 sketches based on the information received from the satellites indicating the location of catch in signs intelligible to fishermen and it will be passed on them early before they set to sail for fishing.
