Conferences focusing on Indian thought being organized'

At the inaugural of a three day International Conference on 'Health psychology and counselling:issues, opportunities and challenges' that is being organized by the Department of Psychology and Parapsychology of AU on Tuesday, the speakers emphasized the positive role for health psychology and counselling to improve quality living. In a key note address, Vedagiri Ganesan of Bharatiar University, Coimbatore said that some undesirable human thoughts and emotions could trigger and maintain specific detrimental endocrinal secretions into the blood stream that directly affected every cell in the human body resulting physical and mental problems.
He said that Psychologists play a significant role in the fields of preventive, curative and rehabilitative medicines and yoga, mediation and faith had a significant impact of mind over body and drew attention to the works of Patanjali and contemporary yogis. Andhra University Vice Chancellor L Venugopal Reddy said with stressful jobs and lifestyle related problems, health psychology and counselling had a big role to play.
Alay Ahmad of Preston University, Pakistan stressed the need for positive psychology working towards civic virtues and values and sense of well being. Andhra University College of Arts and Science Principal JV Prabhakara Rao said that it was the first time since 1973 a Pakistani academic was participating in Andhra University's programme.
