Collaborative success of Altair Engineering with any University on Grid technologies is first of its kind in Asia Pacific
Hyderabad, July 23, 2008
The University of Hyderabad and Altair Engineering India (AEI) signed an MoU at the University of Hyderabad on 23 July 2008. The MOU had emanated from the success of collaborative endeavor of the Computer and Information Science Department with Altair in integration of HPC profile with PBS and also on certain aspects of Grid portals which was showcased and appreciated during Super computing event of 07 held in Nevada, USA. Such collaborative success of Altair Engineering with any University on Grid technologies is first of its kind in Asia Pacific.
Areas of Collaboration:
I. Academic Exchange in the broad areas of mutual interest, AEI intends to offer participation to mutually selected students from the Post graduate (M- Tech) and PhD programmes through student internship in the following Project areas such as
a) Application integration framework of PBS Gridworks
b) Development of a utility oriented , GUI based Gridworks configuration and administration module
c) Projects of Integrated grid portals –with single – sign on authentication methods
d) Other areas of mutual interest as identified during the MOU validity period.
II. R & D collaborations in the above said areas and further collaborative endeavor will be with utilization of commercial grade technology portal solutions in other areas, such as:
(a) Computer – Aided Engineering
(b) Life sciences
(c) 3D animation and VFX Graphics, for rendering high quality film animation
III. Training and Teaching in the above areas
Delivering guest lectures / training by members of AGT- India / select customers on various subject areas thus sharing their knowledge and enabling interaction.
AEI together with DCIS will come up with curriculum for conducting one – two day certification programs or Workshops on various aspects of Grid technologies for other universities of Andhra Pradesh and India.
DCIS can have a revenue model for these certification programs, wherein Altair will not cost DCIS for these visits of guest lectures / workshops.
IV. Assisting each other for the organization and/or participation in national and international symposia, conferences, specialized exhibitions and similar events taking place in the respective places/countries. The contribution of UoH in development will be recognized in various forums of Grid technology wherever Altair would be participating and demonstrating.
V. Exchanging of information regarding business ideas, product innovation and commercialization. In case of commercialization of a project deliverable, AEI will make a reference to the research contribution of DCIS. Similarly, in the research publications of project results, DCIS would acknowledge the support received from AEI during execution of the project.
The decision of commercialization of projects would be communicated to DCIS, UOH and a one time royalty amount decided at the time of communication would be paid by Altair India to the department which can be used for further developmental activities of the DCIS.
VI. All other relevant activities of mutual interest of UoH and AEI.

From the Desk of the Vice-Chancellor
Today we witnessed consolidation of the relationship between The University of Hyderabad, a premier institution of postgraduate teaching and research, established by an Act of Parliament in 1974 as a Central University and Altair Engineering India (AEI), Indian subsidiary of US based Altair engineering Inc, a global software and services company focused on Grid computing solutions for both Commercial and academic research, data analysis and visualization.
This is a fine example of the Industry-Academia relationship and I see bright prospects as the synergy between us develop in the area of Gird Computing to address the needs of the Grand Challenge problems of tomorrow.
It would be interesting to see how we could easily derive compute cycles sitting at home in the same way as we derive electric power, water and telephone access for our needs.
