About the course

Students admitted to the programme are eligible for the award of M.Sc. degree in Biotechnology on successful completion of the course.

The main thrust areas of the Centre are quantitative aspects in Biology with core courses in Biological Chemistry, (including Biochemical and Biophysical methods), Cell Biology, Computer Programming, Biomathematics and Statistics, Molecular Biology, Genetics, Immunology, Microbiology, Virology and Bioinformatics which are offered in the first two semesters. In the later two semesters, more specialized and advanced courses, namely, Genetic Engineering, Tissue Culture (Animal & Plant), Molecular Biophysics, Membrane Biophysics & Bioenergetics, Biochemical Engineering, Plant Biotechnology, Chemical Synthesis and Screening, Immunotechnology and seminar are offered. Some of these courses are optional. The students are also offered a research project/scientific review in the last semester. In all, students need to complete hundred credits during four semesters (credit system).

The department has well-equipped and established research laboratories and various faculty members pursue research in the areas of Molecular Biology, Genetic Engineering, Tissue Culture, Membrane Biophysics and Bioenergetics, Molecular Biophysics, Proteomics and Plant Biotechnology.

The department has active interaction for both teaching and research with various departments in the University of Pune, and a number of neighbouring institutes, namely, National Chemical Laboratory, National Institute of Virology, National Centre for Cell Science, National AIDS Research Institute and Agharkar Research Institute.
