About the course

Students admitted to the programme are eligible for the award of M.Sc. degree in Biotechnology on successful completion of the course.

The Department of Biotechnology at Punjabi University, Patiala offers M.Sc. Biotechnology degree with a specialization of INDUSTRIAL BIOTECHNOLOGY. Students are introduced to practical and theoretical aspects of major areas of Biotechnology in four semesters. There are four theory and two practical papers in first three semesters. Course offered to the students includes in first semester: Principles of Biochemistry; Fundamental of Molecular Genetics & Functional Genomics; General Microbiology; Immunology & Immunotechnology, in second semester: Genetic Engineering; Molecular Biophysics & Modelling; Bioprocess & Biochemical Engineering; Fermentation Technology in third semester: Enzymology & Enzyme Technology; Microbial & Food Technology; Environmental Biotechnology; Total Quality Management & Commercial Biotechnology in fourth semester: Bioinformatics & Computational Biology; Tissue & Cell Culture Technology and research project. Besides this, students are sent to various Industries/in-plant training after the completion of the second semester.

The Department of Biotechnology has active Interaction with a number of neighbouring institutes/research & development centres/industries, such as, Institute of Microbial Technology, Chandigarh, Thapar Corporate Research & Development Centre, Patiala, Pepsi Foods Ltd., Channo, Patiala, NIPER, Mohali, PGIMER, Chandigarh, IIT Delhi, IARI, New Delhi. The University has MoU with IHBT, Palampur for collaborative research. The Department has well-equipped laboratories with modern instrumentation.
