University to offer graduate, postgraduate, Ph.D programmes
Vice Chancellor of Madras University S Ramachandran, speaking after a senate meeting said that the University will be setting up studios to offer Virtual University courses starting from the next academic year.
The Virtual University studios will be set up at the University Campus, AM Jain College, the Vel Rangarajan College of Arts and Science, DG Vaishnav College and Dr. Ambedkar Government Arts College. Virtual studios with telenet and videoconferencing equipment will be set up in the next four months time. Each of the studio will be constructed at a cost of Rs. 75 Lakhs and the total estimated cost for the entire setup will be Rs. 13 crores. The University is putting in Rs. 6.5 Crores while the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development will be funding the rest.
This exercise is a part of the first phase of the ambitious virtual universities concept which, in later phases, will involve tele-resource sharing among the three universities - Universities of Madras, Mumbai and Calcutta. Once operational, the virtual universities will help inter-linking of Universities and better utilization of its resources – faculty, libraries, laboratories and research facilitates.
