CS63 - Introduction to System Software

This is a Project. There are five questions. Answer all the questions. You may use illustrations and diagrams to enhance explanations wherever necessary.

Question 1: Consider the following set of processes that arrive in the ready queue at the same time:

Process - CPU time
job1 - 2
job2 - 1
job3 - 4
job4 - 3
job5 - 1
job6 - 2

Consider the following scheduling algorithms: FCFS, SJF and Round Robin (quantum = 1)

(i) What is turnaround time of each process for each of the above scheduling algorithms?
(ii) What is the waiting time of each process for each of the above algorithms? (3 Marks)

Question 2: Write a shell script called bigfile which will change to your home directory, search and list all your files which are stored in the directory from the biggest to the smallest in size and displays the output in 8 columns on 78-character wide lines. (2 ½ Marks)

Question 3: Write a shell script, using the more command, and a pipe command to send the contents of your .profile and .shrc files to display them on the screen. (2 ½ Marks)

Question 4: Write a shell program to convert a decimal number to its binary equivalent. (4 Marks)

Question 5: Write a shell program to find the validity of a given date. (3 Marks)
