The Government of India has decided to drop IIT status to seven Engineering Colleges in the country as per the recommendations from SK Joshi Committee. The seven institutions are the Institute of Technology BHU, Varanasi, University College of Engineering, Osmania University, University College of Technology, Osmania University, Bengal Engineering College, Howrah, Jadavpur University's Engineering and Technology Departments, Zakir Hussain College of Engineering and Technology, AMU Aligarh, Andhra University College of Engineering, Visakhapatnam and Cochin University of Science and Technology.
The SK Committee said, "The committee felt it would not be correct to position these institutions straightway alongside the IITs". The Government said it will give 'differential treatment' to help them improve.
