B.Sc. DEGREE COURSE IN BOTANY
SEMESTER SYSTEM WITH CREDITS
(Effective from the Academic Year 2003-2004)
SYLLABUS

Application Oriented Subject-II - Horticulture

Duration: 3 hrs
Maximum Marks: 100
Credits: 4

Lecture 4 Hrs; Practicals 2 Hrs. per week

Theory

Unit - I

Garden components - lawn, trees, shrubs, climbers and creepers, flower beds and borders, hedges and edges, paths, rockery, greenhouse, bonsai.

Unit - II

Manures, role, advantages and disadvantages of important types of fertilizers. Time and application of manures and fertilizers. Foliar applicants and nutrients.

Unit - III

Types of pots and containers: Pot mixtures and potting media for different omamentals. Brief account of hydrophonics.

Unit - IV

Propagation - cutting, layering and grafting. Indoor garden - potted plants, hanging baskets, cut flowers, Ikebana, Bouquet.

Unit - V

Plant protection - general account of insecticides and pesticides. Common diseses of fruits and vegetable crops.

Practicais

1. Identification of common, ornamental plants
2. Types of pots and containers
3. Manures, fertilizers, insecticides, fungicides and plant growth regulators
4. Role of plant growth regulators in rooting of cuttings
5. Flower arrangement - fresh and dry Ikebana
6. Decoration using fruits, vegetables and dry plants
7. Identification of common diseases and pests of fruit and vegetable crops

Note:

Visit to a botanical garden under the guidance of teachers is encouraged
