B.Sc. DEGREE COURSE IN BOTANY
SEMESTER SYSTEM WITH CREDITS

SYLLABUS

Application Oriented Subject II - Plant Protection

Duration: 3 hrs
Maximum Marks: 100
Credits: 4

Lecture 4 Hrs; Practicals 2 Hrs. per week

Unit - I

A general account of plant diseases and causal agents. insect transmission of bacteria and viruses.

Unit - II

Principles of Plant Protection: Prevention, quarantine, eradication, burning, removal of alternate host. Protection: a) cultural, b) chemical and c) biological. Seed certification - Legilation in plant protection.

Unit - III

Classification of different chemical pesticides - their mode of action and residual effects.

Unit - IV

Study of symptoms, etiology and control measures of the following plant diseases. 1) Damping off of seelings, 2) Blast of paddy, 3) Red rot of sugarcane, 4) Wilt of cottOn, 5) Citrus canker, 6) Tobacco mosaic and 7) Bunchy top of Banana.

Unit - V

Plant protection appliances: Sprayers - dusters - soil injector - seed dressing drum.

Practical

1. A detailed study of diseased specimens included in the theory.
2. Identification of various plant protection appliances mentioned in the syllabus and their working mechanism.
