B.Sc. DEGREE COURSE IN BOTANY
SEMESTER SYSTEM WITH CREDITS

SYLLABUS

Semester I - Paper I - Phycology

Duration: 3 hrs
Maximum Marks: 100
Credits: 4

Theory: Lecture 7 Hrs; Practicals 2 Hrs. per week

Unit - I

Classification and general characters of Algae (Smith - 1958) Classification, occurrence, distribution, thallus structure, pigmentation, reserve food. Materials and type of life cycles of Cyanophyceae.

Example 1. Osciliatoria 2. Nostoc

Unit - II

Classification, occurrence, distribution, thallus structure, pigmentation, reserve food, materials and life cycles in Chiorophyceace and Charophyceace.

Example: 1. Chiorella, 2.Volvox, 3. Oedogoniurn, 4. Coleochaete.

Unit - III

5. Cosmarium. 6.Caulerpa, 7.Chara

Unit - IV

Classification, occurrence, distribution, thallus structure, pigmentation, reserve food. And life cycles in Bacillariophyceae. phaeophycee and Rhodophyceae

Example; 1. Cyclotella. 2.Sargassum, 3. Gracillaria

Unit - V

Economic importance of algae with reference to Agar, Alginate, Diatomaceous earth, Oxidation ponds Spirullina culture.

Practical

A detailed study of structure of thallus and reproductive structures of types given in the syllabus and submission of record.
