SYLLABUS

Semester V - Paper V - Microbiology and Plant Pathology

Duration: 3 hrs
Maximum Marks: 100
Credits: 4

Lecture 4 Hrs; Practicals 2 Hrs. per week

Unit - I

Scope - general characteristics of bacteria, viruses and fungi. isolation and culture of micro organisms.

Microbial nutrition - types of media (semisolid and broth) antiseptics and antibiotics.

Unit - II

Bacteria - classification - external and internal structure - reproduction Unusual bacteria (mycoplasma, photosynthetic. chemosynthetic and nitrogen fixing types of bacteria).

Unit - III

Viruses - general structure - viral components - classification - transmission - muitiplicaiton (bacteriophage) - virus like infectious agents (virioids and prions) viral diseases - symptomatology

Unit - IV

Plant Pathology: Pathogenesis, mechanism of infection, host-pathogen interaction, principles of plant diseases control (physical, chemical and biological).

Unit - V

Detailed study of the following diseases and control measures 1. Damping off of seedlings
2. Late Blight of potato
3. Wilt disease of cotton
4. Citrus canker
5. Tobacco mosic diesease
