Semester V - Paper VIII - Plant Breeding and Evolution

Unit - I
Methods of Crop improvement - introduction, acclimatization different methods of selection (mass, pureline and clonal).
Unit - II
Hybridization techniques - interspectific and intergeneric hybridization - heterosis.
Unit - III
Polyploidy and its application in plant breeding, breeding for disease resistance, mutation breeding.
Unit - IV
Breeding for crop improvement with reference to Paddy, Wheat, Sugarcane and Ground nut
Unit - V
Evolution: Origin of life, theories related to origin of life and evolution, chemosynthetic theory on the origin of life. Evolutionary theory of Lamarck. Darwin and DeVries - Modern synthetic theory of evolution.
