UNIVERSITY OF MADRAS
B.Sc. DEGREE COURSE IN CHEMISTRY
SEMESTER SYSTEM WITH CREDITS
(Effective from the Academic Year 2003-2004)

Allied Chemistry - Human Ecology and Resource Management Major - Paper I

(45 hrs)

Unit - I

(15 hrs)

1.1 Chemical bonding

Molecular orbital Theory - bonding, anti bonding and non-bonding orbitals. Bond order M.0. configurations of H2. He2, N2, O2, F2. Diamasnetism and para magnetism. VSEPR Theory. Shapes of H2O, NH3, CH4, BrF3, IF5, IF7 molecular.

1.2. Preparation, properties, uses and structures of peracids of sulphur. Preparation and uses of sodium hydro suiphite, sodium Thiosuiphate.

1.3. Hydrides
Classification, preparation and properties.

Unit - II

(15 hrs)

2.1. Stereo isomerism - Elements of symmetry - symmetry and asymmetry - cause of optical activity - Isomerism of Tartaric acid, recimisation and resolution. Geometrical isomerism of maleic and fumaric acids - Keto - enol tautomerism.

2.2. Aromatic compounds : Aromaticity - Huckel's rule - Mechanism of Nitration, halogenation, acylation and sulphonation of benzerie.

2.3. Preparaion and uses of CHCl3, Saccharin, Aspartic Acid, Aspirin, Phenaeetin.

Unit - III

3.1. Energeties Types of system - reversible and irreversible processes, isothermal, adiabatic processer and spontaneous processes statements of I law, Need for II law of Thermo dynamics and statements.

3.2. Solutions - Liquid in liquid type - Raoult's law for ideal solutions - positive and negative deviations from Rasult's law - reasons and examples - Fractional distillation and azeotropic distillation.
