HUMAN ECOLOGY AND RESOURCE MANAGEMENT MAJOR - Paper II

Unit - I
(15 hrs)
1.1. Carbohydrates: classification - properties of glucose and Fructose - discussion about open chain and ring structures of glucose and Fructose. Properties and structure of sucrose. Properties and uses of starch and cellulose and their derivaties.
1.2. Amino acids - classification - preparation and properties of alpha amino acids. Peptide synthesis. Classification of proteins by physical properties and biological functions. Biological functions of peptide harmones, protein Harmones - Elementary ideas of RNA and DNA.
Unit - II
(15 hrs)
Chemotherapy: Preparation, uses and mode of action of suipha - drugs - prontoril, sulpha diazines and sulpha furazole - uses of penicillin, chloramphenicol and streptomycin. Definition and one example for analgerics, antipyretics, tranquilirers, sedatives, hypnotics, local anaesthetics and general anaesthetics cause and treatments of diabetes, cancer and aids.
Unit - III
(15 hrs)
3.1. Environmental chemistry - pollution of air, water and soil by chemical and chemical industries - sources consequences and controlling methods.
3.2. Industrial chemistry - Fuel gases - Natural gas, Water gas, Semi water gas, Carburetted water gases, producer gas, oil gas. Synthesis, properties and uses of silicones.
3.3. Fertilisers - preparation and uses of urea, ammonium sulphate, super phosphate triple super phosphate, and NPK fertilizer.

5. Estimation of Oxalic acid - Std. Oxalic acid.
6. Estimation of KMnO
4 using Std. Oxalic acid.
7. Estimation of ferrous ion using Diphenyl - amine as internal indicator.
8. Estimation of temporary and permanent hardness of water (not to be given for exam).
Organic Analysis
Reaction of aldehyde (arometic), ketone, carbohydrate, carbolic acid, phenol, aromatic primary amine, amide, diamide, systematic analysis of organic compounds cotaining one functional group and characterisation by confirmatory tests.
