Unit I

Petrology

Definition-Rocks, their general classification into igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic - Forms and structures of igneous rocks- Textures - Classification of igneous rocks - Bowen's reaction series - Differentiation and Assimilation - An outline of classification of sedimentary rocks -Textures and Structures of sedimentary rocks - Definition - agents and kinds of metamorphism - Zones, grades and facies of metamorphism - Textures and Structures of metamorphic rocks.

Unit II

Economic Geology

Processes of mineral formation - Classification of Mineral deposits - Brief study of Gold, lron, Copper, Manganese, Lead & Zinc, Bauxite, Coal and Petroleum

Unit III

Hydrogeology

Groundwater in hydrologic cycle - Origin of water - Meteoric - Juvenile - Magmatic and Seawater - Brief description of porosity, specific yield, specific retention and permeability - Types of aquifers: Unconfined Confined - Perched - Aquifuge - Aquitard - Aquiclude - Groundwater recharge - Articificial recharge - Groundwater movement: Darcy's law - Groundwater basins of Tamil Nadu.

Unit IV

Environmental Geology

Introduction to Environmental Geology - Brief account of different energy systems - Short account of renewable and non-renewable resources - Mitigation and Disaster and remedial measures relating to natural hazards - effects of urbanization on quality of surface waters and causes for groundwater pollution - Impacts of man on environment - Types of Pollution.

Unit V

Engineering Geology

Role of engineering geology in civil construction and mining industry - Various stages of engineering geological investigation for civil engineering projects - Engineering properties of rocks - Brief study of Geological consideration of Dams and Reservoirs - Tunnels
