SYLLABUS
Application Oriented Subjects - MAO-I - Clinical Bacteriology and Mycology
Unit I :
Recommendations for the collection, transport of specimens, isolation of bacteria from clinical specimens - Primary media for isolation and their quality control -- Antibiotic sensitivity discs, testing procedures and their quality control. General Principles, media and isolation
techniques involved for anaerobic bacteria, Mycrobacteria, Spirochetes, Mycoplasma and Ureoplasmas.
Classification and general properties of medically important bacteria.
Unit II :
Staphylococcus; streptococci and related catalase negative Gram- positive cocci, Neisseria and Branhamella Corynebacterium and related organisms. Listeria and Erysiopelothrix, spirochetes.
Unit III :
Bacillus, Mycobatcterium, Aerobic Pathogenic actinomycetes, Vibrios, Aermomonas,
Plesiomonas, Campylobacter, Helicobacter Pseudomonas, Legionella, Freacisella, Brucella,
Haemophilus, Bordetteila, Enterobacteriaceae, Mycoplasma, Clostridia, Anaerobic Gram Positive
Nonsporing baccilli and-cocci. Anaerobic Gram - negative bacilli and cocci.
Unit IV :
Mophology, Taxonomy, classification of fungi, detection and recovery of fungi from clinical specimens. Dermatophytes and agents of superficial mycoses. Yeasts of medical importance, Mycotoxins, Antifungal agents, testing methods and quality control.
Unit V :
Dimorphic fungi causing systemic mycoses. Dimatiaceous fungi, opportunistic hyaline hyphomycetes, agents of zygomycosis. Fungi causing Eumycotic mycetoma. Newer methods in diagnostic mycology. Immunity to fungal infections.
