Semester V - Application Oriented Subject I - Fundamentals of Textiles and Clothing

OBJECTIVES
To help the students to
1. Study the science of Textiles and use this knowledge in wise buying
2. Select clothing appropriate for various family members.
3. Learn the techniques involved in garment construction.
THEORY
1. Fibre study - (a) Classicication of fibres - study of properties common to protein, cellulose, mineral and thermoplastic filers, (b) Manufacture, uses and properties of Cotton, Jute, Viscose Rayon, Wool, Silk, Nylon, Terylene and Acrylic.
2. Yarn processing - Steps involved in processing cotton yarns - classification of yarns based on direction of twist, count - simple and novelty yarns.
3. Weaving (a) parts of a loom, basic weaving operation study of weaves - Basic weaves and figure weaves.
4. Fabric finishing - Purpose and uses of various finishes - boiling, bleaching, tentering, calendering, sizing, weighting, mercerising, napping, sanforising, crease proofing.
5. Dyeing and printing - (a) Classification of dyes - Direct, Basic, Acid, Mordant, Naphthol, Reactive and Vat dyes - Methods of Dyeing Stock, Top, Yarn and Piece dyeing. (b) Hand methods of printing - Batik, Tie & Dye, Block - Screen Printing, Roller printing and its styles - Diurect, Discharge and Resist method.
6. Care of Textile - Principles of laundering and storinig cotton, wool, silk, rayon and synthetic fabrics - study on selection of sintable soaps, bleaches, whitening and stiffening agents.
7. Family clothing plan - Principles of preparing clothing budget and wardrobe planning - selection and buying of fabrics and readymades based on art principles personal characteristics and other factors.
8. Techniques of clothing construction
a. Selection, use and care of sewing machine and sewing tools.
b. Study of basic hand stitches - temporary and permanent
d. Methods of introducing fullness into a fabric - darts, tucks, pleats and gathers.
9. Principle of pattern making, Fabric Preparation, Pattern, Layout and garment cutting.
a. Steps in preparing the basic bodies, sleeve and skits pattern for children and adults women based on body measurements.
b. Steps in fabrics prepared
c. Pattern layout
d. Methods of transferring pattern markings on to a fabric.
10. Application of computer aided designing in weaving.
PRACTICALS
1. Identifying cotton, silk wool, rayon, acetate nylon and polyester by visual, burning, anicroscopic, chemical tests.
2. Identifying weaves and prints
3. Determining colour fastness to sunlight and shrinkage to laundering.
4. Sewing processes - (a) Hand stitches - Temporary and permanent (b) seams and seam finishes (c) preparation and application of true bias facing, shaped facing and bias binding.
5. Plackets and opening - continuous and Bound plackets
6. Fullness - Darts, Tucks, Pleats, Gathers, Frills and Smoking.
7. Decorative stitches.

9. Construction a couple of designs for Baby's dress, Girls Prock on crepe paper or fabric in small scale.
