Semester VI - Paper VIII - Physiology of Exercise

Unit I

Meaning Nature and scope of Exercise Physiology.

Unit II

a. Effect of Exercise on the various systems of the body with special emphasis on the

i. circulatory

ii. respiratory

iii. digestive

iv. muscular

v. endocrine and

vi. nervous system

vii. excretory system.

b Muscle contraction and exercise

i. Properties and composition of voluntary muscles.

ii. Minute structure of voluntary muscle.

iii. Changes in muscle contraction

Unit III

i. Nerve control of muscular activity, control of motor and sensory activity by cerebrum and cerebellum, muscle spindle, golgi tendon organs, reflex arc and action.

ii. Conditions affecting muscular contraction.

Unit IV

Factors influencing Sports performance

i. Warming up

ii. Conditioning

iii. Training

iv. Relation between performance security of Exercise

Unit V

i. Source of Energy - Carbohydrates, proteins and fats, Anaerobic and Aerobic Glycolysis, Metabolism of protein and fat.

ii. Energy requirements for sports - optional utilization of energy for different activities.
