Semester V - Paper VII - Basic Electronics

Duration of Examination: 3 hrs
Maximum Marks: 100
Credits: 4

Unit I

Semiconductors:

Pure semiconductor, recombination of electrons and holes, electron energy bands in crystals, classification of solids in terms of forbidden energy gap, Fermi level, junction diode.

Rectifiers:

Half wave and full wave rectifiers - Bridge rectifier-d.c current, r.m.s current, power, efficiency and ripple factor for half wave and full wave rectifiers - Zener diode- Zener regulated power supply.

Unit II

Transistors:

Transistor construction-different modes of operation - Alpha and Beta of a transistor - characteristics in CE and CB modes-transistor biasing.

Transistor amplifier:

Two port representation of a transistor - h-parameters-AC equivalent circuit using h-parameters-Analysis of an amplifier using h-parameters - common emitter only expressions for current gain, voltage gain, input impedance, output impedance and power gain.

RC coupled amplifier-frequency response - analysis of low, mid and high frequency regions-classification of amplifiers-class A power amplifier - Push-pull, class-B power amplifier - Emitter follower.

DC amplifier-Operational Amplifier fundamentals - characteristics - Inverting amplifier - non-inverting amplifier - unity follower

Unit III

Feedback and oscillators:

Feed back in amplifier - effect of negative feed back - concept of feed back oscillators. Hartley, Colpitt's, phase shift and Wien's bridge oscillators - expressions for frequency of oscillation and condition for oscillation in each case.

Unit IV

Wave shaping circuits and multivibrators:

Clipping and clamping circuits - biased clipper-integrating and differentiating circuits - RC time constants. Multivibtrators - Astable - monostable and bi-stable multivibrators - using transistors.

Unit V

Radio and Television:

Radio communication and Television - Modulation - amplitude modulation, frequency modulation and phase modulation-detector-Radio transmitter-receiver-concepts of television system-Image orthicon-scanning-synchronization-TV transmitter - TV receiver-TV channel width- Principles of colour TV- Satellite communication
