Semester VI - Paper XI - Semiconductor Devices and Digital Electronics

Unit I
Special devices:
Special semi conductor devices-Field Effect Transistor (FET), Uni-Junction Transistor (UJT), Silicon Controlled Rectifier (SCR) construction, characteristics and working - FET amplifier - UJT relaxation oscillator - Firing of SCR using UJT- SCR as a switch - SCR rectifier Photo diode and photo transistor - uses.
Unit II
Digital Electronics Fundamentals:
Number Systems - Conversion from one number system to another - Complements - BCD code - Binary logic - Logic gates - AND, OR NOT gates-Truth tables.
Boolean Algebra - laws- Simplification of Boolean Functions - De Morgan's theorem-NAND , NOR gates - Universal building blocks.
Binary addition-subtraction-multiplication and division-subtraction by l's and 2's complement forms.
Unit III
Simplification of logic circuits:
Sum of products - Product of sums - Simplification of logic equations using Boolean
algebra - Simplification by Karnaugh map - pairs, quads, octets - upto 4 - variables- Simplified circuit using NAND gates only-Product of sums.
Unit IV
Combinational circuits:
Half adder, full adder, half subtractor and full subtractor - 4-bit adder/subtractor.
Decoder - Encoder - Multiplexer - Demultiplexer - PLA.
Unit V
Sequential logic circuits:
RS, D and 3K Flip-flops - 3K Master Slave flip flop - Shift Registers - Ripple Counters
- BCD counter - Introduction to synchronous counters (design not required).
