Semester V - Application Oriented Subject I - Principles of Interior Design

OBJECTIVES:

1) Gain knowledge to basic principle of design and art.

2) Application and creation to various interiors and concerning innovative designs.

I. Definition - Introduction to art & design.

A brief study of:

a) Elements of Design:

Time, direction, shape or form, size, texture, space & colour

b) Design:

Structural and Decorative, Characteristic of good structural and decorative design. Types decorative, Naturalistic, stylised, abstract and geometrical design.

c) Principles of Design:

Haromony, Balance, Proportion, Emphasis and Rhythm (Definition, Types and its application to interior & Exterior)

d) Colour:

Qualities (Prang Colour Theory, Colour harmonies, colour schemes)

II. Creating a Life Space:

a) Factors in planning a life space:
Private spaces - sleeping, dressing, hygiene, house guests, Individual work & hobby, solitude kitchen utility space.

b) Organising space plans: (a brief study)
One room apartment, Twin houses, One story, double and multiple story.

III. Wall and floor Coverings and finishes, Types, materials, care and maintenance.

IV. Lighting in interiors, Window Treatments.

V. Study of Traditional and Modern furniture styles, selection, care and arrangement of furniture & fixtures in relation of its space. Furnishing & accessories.

VI. Landscape gardening, house plants, flower arrangements.

VII, Art in Food Service - Different Styles.

PRACTICALS:

1) Analysing design for their qualities.

2) Visits to various interiors.

3) Making types of flower arrangements.

4) Simple exercises in principles & elements of design.

5) Table setting.
