Semester IV - Allied IV - Human Development and Family Studies

Objectives:
1. To understand development aspects (both normal and exceptional)
a) Physical and Motor
b) Cognitive
C) Psycho-social
d) Emotion
e) Language
f) Moral
g) Creative from conception to old age as they can be guided effectively.
2. To have complete knowledge about the behaviour pattern of the individual and various factors influencing them.
Course Content
1. a) Human Development-The Science of Human Development - The purpose of study, concept of development and growth - principles governing growth and development - developmental tasks of different stages. Methods of study of human development - Brief outline of the major theories of child development.
b) Stages of lifespan-Conception, infancy, pre-school, elementary school, adolescence, adulthood, middle age and old age.
2. a) Prenatal Development - Reproductive systems, conception, test tube baby, periods of prenatal development - signs of pregnancy.
b) Prenatal care-Management of normal pregnancy - hygiene, diet and medical supervision. Hazards during pregnancy, preparing for the baby, family adjustments.
c) Labour - signs of labour, stages of labour - types of birth, multiple pregnancy.
d) Post-natal care, normal puer-premium, prevention of gynecological complications.
e) Adjustments of the newborn to temperature breathing, feeding and elimination.
3. a) Infancy (Birth to 2 years) - Development - Physical and motor social, emotional, cognitive and language, mirror.
b) Effect of stimulation - care of infants, feeding, training, bathing, clothing, sleeping and immunisation, prevention of accidents - importance of 'Mothering' and emotional growth. Importance of psychological needs.
4. Preschool stage (2-6 years) - physical and motor development, emotional development, social development-cognitive and language development, creativity, importance of play, importance of family relationships, behaviour problems - causes and treatment.
5. Elementary school oeriod (6-12 years)
a) Developments physical, social, emotional, cognitive and language, sex education.
b) Children with special needs - identification and rehabilitation.
6 Adolescence - (12-18 years) Physical, emotional, intellectual and moral development, personal adjustment and maladjustment, Delinquency-causes, prevention and rehabilitation and drug addiction, alcoholsrn rehabilitation.
7. Adulthood (18-60 years) - Characteristics and development tasks. All aspects of development - vocations! development.
8 Old age (60 years and above) Physical and psychological changes, problems of the aged, family attitudes towards the aged, place of the aged in Indian society.
9. Computer Application - Drawing up a plan for a preschool building, creche. Recording case histories and entering all the records and registers.
10. Family - Charactenstics and developmental tasks:
a) lndian family - Traditional and Modern.
b) Functions of family.
c) Family in India - factors influencing the Indian family.
d) Marriage and family as basic institutions - functions of marriage, importance of physical and mental health, emotional maturity, personal development factors affecting marriage relationships, religion, socioeconomic status, career and money.
e) Adjustments in marriage - in laws, domestic and social.
f) Family life cycle - adjustments in different stages.
g) Crisis in the family - critical family situations and their effect on children.
h) Maternal and paternal deprivation and their effect on the child's rowth and development.
i) Parental attitiides and their influence on children
11. Small family Norms - Concept, advantages and limitations.
Practicals:
1. Preparahon of the case history of a child, Visits to institutions for Children with Special needs.
2. Sociometric study on Adolescents.
3. study on qualities preferred by adotescents in their life partner.
4. Survey on in-law relationship.
5. Survey on problems of Old Age.
6. Teaching nursery school children.
7. Preparation and use of Audio Visual aids for Children.
