PAPER I- PRINCIPLES OF TOURISM

1. Growth of Tourism - History of travel - Ancient, medieval and modern period - Accounts of famous travellers - a purpose of travel - impact of world war's on transport system - The origin & concept of the annual holiday - Industrial revolution and Development of travel - Paid holidays and mass tourism - Effects of the world war on tourism.

2. Growth and Development of Modern Tourism - Post Second World War phenomenon - Causes of rapid growth - Components of tourism - Attractions accomodation and accessibility - types of tourism motivation for travel - seasonality of tourism.

3. Economic and Social significance and their impacts on tourism - Economic benefits - effects on employment - Development of infrastructure - Tourism as a foreign exchange earner.

4. Tourism Planning and promotion - Planning for tourism - Coordination in planning - assessment of tourist demand and supply - basic infrastructure planning for finance, human resources & environment maintance of tourist centres - time factor - regional planning consideration - tourism promotional planning - advertisement, media, public relations & publicity.

5. Tourism development in india - sargent committee - growth of tourism since independence - the evolution & role of itdc in indian tourism - the organisations of tourism (nto) need and necessities - measurement of tourists data.
