SYLLABUS

Semester VI - Paper X - Electrical and Electromagnetic Methods

Duration: 3 hrs

Credits: 4

Unit I

Electrical properties of earth material Conductivity of metals, conductivity of electronic semiconductors solid electrolytes, solid conduction in rocks, conduction in water bearing rocks, description of geoelectric section, resistivity, dielectric constant and electric polarization, magnetic permeability - Classification of electrical methods.

Unit II

Resistivity methods - True and Apparent resistivity, units of measurements, homogeneous and anisotropic earth, factors affecting resistivity, single overburden problem, profiling and sounding in resistivity method, DC and AC resistivity meters, collection of field data and interpretation of the profiling and sounding data, Presentation of results, geoelectric section, applications of electrical methods.

Unit III

Spontaneous Polarization methods: Geochemical potentials, electro - kinetic potential, diffusion potential, shale potential, mineralization potential, variations in Spontaneous Ploarization (SP), collection of SP field data, interpretation of SP data, presentation of results.

Unit IV

Electromagnetic methods : induction of electric field, alternating current, theory, eddy currents, advantages of AC methods, real and imaginary field, various coil arrangements, profiling and sounding in induction methods, field procedure for obtaining the data using the Turam and Slingram methods, modelipg in electro magnetic techniques and their use in interpretation of the data - Application of electromagnetic methods.

Unit V

Brief description of the principle, field procedure and application for the charged body method, induced polarization method, equi - potential method.
