SECTION A

NAVIGATION

1. On 1st September 1992, AM at ship in DR 18o00' N, 178o 11' E, the sextant altitude of the pole star was 18o 47.4' at 05 h 21 m 08 s by chronometer (error 01 m 18 s slow). HE = 12.5 m, IE = 1.6' on the arc. Find the direction of the PL and position through which to draw it. If the azimuth was 001o (C), and var was 1.3oE, find the deviation. (10)

2. On 23rd August 1992 in DR 34o 31' S, 003o 30' W, at about 1800 hrs. at ship, the sextant altitude of the star SPICA was 45o 27.2', when the chron (error 02 m 19 s slow) showed 06 h 15 m 00s. If HE was 11 m and IE was 2.1' on the arc. calculate the direction of the PL and the position through which it passes. (15)

3. When is the Earth said to be in 'aphelion' and 'perihelion' and how is the Sun's visible diameter affected at these epochs? (10)

SECTION B

CHART WORK

On 20th December, a ship steering 230o (C) at 11 Knots, at 2000 Hrs. Anvil Point LT bore 052.5o (C) and Bill of Portland Light bore 326.5o (C). Find the ship's position, and from this position, find the Compass Course to steer so as to pass Start Point Light 10 miles ofl when 30' on the Starboard Bow.
(Variation 6o W, Deviation 4.5o W) (5)

(b) Find the course and speed made good if she experienced a current setting 200o (T) at 2 Knots. (5) (c) Find the time and distance off when Berry Head Light will be abeam. (5)

5. (a) Find the Gyro Compass Course to steer from a position at 1900 hrs. with Beachy Head Light bearing 000o (T) at 10 miles, to a position 12 miles off St. Catherine Point Light when abeam, allowing for the Current setting 315o (T) at 2 Knots and Leeway of 3o, Wind South. (5)

(b) Whilst on the above course NAB Tower Light is expected to be raised at a distance of 19 miles. Find the time and the relative bearing when the Light is raised (Ship's speed 12 Knots, Gyro Error 2o High). (5)

6. Find the, earliest time on 17th June, Vessel off BOSTON drawing 3.4 m, will be able to cross a bar mark 2 m, with a clearance of 1 m under her keel.
