BNS-203: CARGO HANDLING, STOWAGE AND SEAMANSHIP

Note : All questions are compulsory.

1. Answer briefly following questions. (2x10=20)

(a) After anchoring, what do you mean by the term 'Brought up' ?
(b) What is the difference between a hard eye and a soft eye when splicing ?
(c) Why is it necessary to mouse a shackle?
(d) What ts the length of a "shackle" of anchor cable ?
(e) What type of ventilation is carried out for coal ?
(f) What do pu mean by a cargo liable to spontaneous combustion ?
(g) What is a dangerous cargo manifest?
(h) Where are bridge fittings used while securing containers ?
(i) What is the purpose of internal ramps on a Ro-Ro vessel ?
(j) What do you mean by topping off on a tanker ?

2. A load of 10 tons is to be lifted by a threefold purchase used to disadventage. Assuming frictional resistance imparted per sheave is 10% of the load and factor of safety is 6, find the size of flexible steel wire (6 x 24) that can be used for the above purpose. (10)

3. List important items that need to be checked as per shipshore safety check list before and during oil transfer operations. (10)
