BNS-204: SHIP OPERATIONS II

Time: 2 hours
Maximum Marks : 70

Note : All questions are compulsory. Use of calculator is allowed.

1. A ship of displacement 15,000 t, KM 8.9 m, KG 7.2 m is to discharge 100 t heavy lift from No. 2 L.H. (KG 3.0 m) by jumbo derrick whose head is 21 m above keel. Find GM (FLUID)when derrick lifts weight to discharge it from L.H. (Given FSM =1200 tm) (7)

2. (a) A box shaped vessel 90 x 10 x 6 m floats in SW on even keel 3 m. Find new draflts if a weight of 64 t on board is shifted a distance of 64 m towards aft. MCTC = 69.188 tm/cm.

(b) A ship of 6000 t displacement has KM = 7.3 m, KG = 6.5 m and is floating upright. A weight of 60 t already on board is shifted 12 m transversely. Find the resultant list. (2x3.5=7)

3. Sketch and label the following : (7)

4. Explain what is meant by panting and pounding. Which parts of the ship are affected by these stresses? Describe and illustrate the structural arrangements to withstand panting. (7)

5. Explain the proper procedure to use a walkie-talkie and a V.H.F. set. (7)
OR
Explain how to secure anchors and make spurling pipes watertight in preparation for a sea passage.

6. Write short notes on any two of the following : (2x3.5=7)

(i) Balanced rudder
(ii) Angle of Loll
(iii) Rake of propeller.
(iv) Bllge strum box

7. Briefly explain provisions regarding discharge of sewage into the sea.

Briefly write the contents of MARPOL Annex II. (7)

8. List any five essential tasks which are carried out during fire drills.

9. What do you understand by international conventions ? Name any three international conventions related to shipping industry. (7)

10. Differentiate between two stroke and four stroke diesel engines.
