1. (a) Write an algorithm, to convert a given decimal number to binary. Also, draw a corresponding flowchart. (6)

(b) With the help of a diagram, write the steps that are to be followed to handle a page fault. (6)

(c) Write a shell program to find the second largest number among four given numbers. (8)

(d) With the help of an example explain the phases that are involved in tbe waterfall life cycle model. (10)

2. (a) Write all the steps that are involved in the expansion of a 'Macro'. Write an example macro to find the cube of a given number. (5)

(b) What is the basic philosophy of X-Windows ? How is it different from the other GUIs ? (5)

3. (a) What are the desirable characteristics of disk allocation ? What are two advantages and two disadvantages of the Indexed allocation method ? (4)

(b) Why is demand paging used in virtual memory management ? With the help of an example, explain the demand paging scheme. (6)

4. (a) Write a shell program that displays the contents of a file in upper case and prints the last 10 lines or the file contents in a separate file with name 'abc'. (5)

(b) Write UNIX commands for the following :
(i) To change the ownership of a file directory.
(ii) To count the number of files in a directory.
(iii) To stop the background process.
(iv) To search text files for a given pattern.
(v) To set the password of the user or change the earlier login password.

5. (a) Define an operating system. What are the essential differences between the following types of operating systems ? (6)
(i) Real-time vs. Batch
(ii) Time-sharing vs. Real-time
(iii) Time-sharing vs. Batch
Also, mention one application that is suitable for each type of O/S given above.

(b) What is a 4GL ? What are three differences between the 4GL and earlier languages. List any three 4GLs. (4)
