ES-311: GROWTH AND PHILOSOPHY OF DISTANCE EDUCATION

Time: 3 hours
Maximum Weightage: 75%

INSTRUCTIONS FOR STUDENTS OF PGDDE

There are two parts of Question Paper in PGDDE Prgramme - Revised Syllabus and Old Syllabus Candiates who registered for PGDDE programme, starting from January 2001 or later should attempt Part I of this Queation Paper (Revised Syllabus). Those who registered for January 2000 session or before should attempt Part II of the Question Papeer (Old Syllabus).

PART I (Revised Syllabus)

Note :
(i) Attempt all the three questions.
(ii) All the three questions carry equal weightage.

1. Answer one of the following questions in about 1200 words :

(i) Discuss the spread of Distance Education all over the world. Justify its relevance in your own situation.
(ii) "Distance Education is an off-shoot of Communications Revolution." Discuss.

2. Answer any four of lthe following in about 300 words each :
(i) Why is academic crediability important in any form of education ?
(ii) Comment briefly on the changing attitudes towards education in India over the ages.
(iii) Discuss the possibilities of 'real' and 'simulated' didactic communication in Distance Education.
(iv) Write a note on 'Mega Open Universities'
(v) Discuss the salient features of 'Integrated National Teacher Education' in Zimbabwe.
(vi) Comment on the promise and reality of Distance Education in the 'Third World'.

3. Answer one of the following in about 1200 words :
(i) Summarise any three theories of Distance Education. Are they 'outdated '? How?
(ii) Think of a situation where you have (a) political will, and (b) material resources to support Distance Education. What more is needed ? Elaborate your answer.

PART II (Old Syllabus)

Note :
(i) Attempt all the three questions.
(ii) All the three questions carry equal weightage.

1. Answer one of the following questions in about 1200 words :
(i) Discuss the significationce of Distance Education in solving the problems of 'numbers' and 'relevance' in a democratic society.
(ii) Discuss the spread of Distance Education at the global level. What do you understand about the potential of Distance Education in your own social context ?

2. Answer any four of the following question in about 300 woords each :
(i) Discuss at least four constraints of the conventional universities in furthering life-long deucation.
(ii) How does distance education enable adult learners to pursue higher education ?
(iii) Discuss the importance of face-to-face tutorials/counselling sessions in distance education.
(iv) How did the off-share engineers in the UK get feedback from their teachers?
(v) Consider at least three major constraints of CCIs/DEIs located in conventional universities in India.
(vi) Describe the characteristic features of adult distance learners.

3. Answer one of the follwoing questions in about 1200 words:
(i) Critically examine the implications of the views of Wedemeyer. More and Peters for an emerging distance education system.
(ii) Consider the views of Sewart and Holmberg on the need for human support in distance learning. Give your own asessment of the practicability of their views.
