ET-507 (A) : POLLUTANTS AND WATER SUPPLY

1. What is ozone layer depletion ? Discuss in detail its cause and effects on Global Environment. (14)

2. (i) Write an essay on management of solid waste under Indian conditions. (10)

(ii) Differentiate between Indore and Bangalore processes of composting. (4)

3. (i) Define "per capita demand of water" and also discuss the factors which influence it. (7)

(ii) For determination of chloride concentration in a water sample, 50 ml sample was taken and to it 0.5 ml of potassium chromate was added giving light yellow colour. The solution was titrated with N/35.5 silver nitrate and the volume of consumed silver nitrate was 20 ml. Calculate the concentration of chloride ions in water sample.
(Take equivalent weight Cl^- as 35.5 g) (7)

4. Using neat sketches, discuss the following: (2x7=14)

(i) Submerged intakes
(ii) Infiltration gallery

5. (i) Discuss the factors that influence the disinfection efficiency of chlorine. (8)

(ii) The chlorine consumption in treatment of 8,000 m³/day of water is 8 kg/day. The residual chlorine after 30 minutes of contact is 0.3 mg/l. Calculate the chlorine dose in milligram and chlorine demand of given water sample. (6)

6. Using sketches, discuss the various types ol lay-outs of pipe systems used in water distribution and compare their relative merits and demerits. (14)
