1. (a) What do you mean by 'mass curve' ? Explain the use of mass curve to determine the reservoir capacity required to produce a specified yield. (7)

(b) Describe the process of preparing the capacity curve of a reservoir. (7)

2. (a) What are the causes of failure of a gravity dam ? (7)

(b) Explain the importance of seepage and leakage control in embankment dams. (7)

3. (a) What is a barrage ? How does it help in raising the water level or pond level ? (7)

(b) What are the advantages and disadvantages of locating headworks in a boulder or a trough stage ? (7)

4. A dam section is 8 m high, the maximum depth of water impounded being 7.5 m. The top width of the section is 10 metre. The unit weight of the masonry is 21.6 kN/m3 while that of water is 9.81 kN/m3. Find the minimum bottom width required to avoid tension at the base of the dam. (14)

Discharge = 275 cumec
Bed slope = 1 in 9000
Side slopes of channel = 1.25 : 1 (H : V)
Depth of channel is restricted to 4 m
Adopt Manning's n = 0.012 (9)

6. (a) Discuss the requirements of a good outlet. (7)

(b) Explain the various factors affecting the economics of a lined channel. (7)
