Andhra University - AU seeks US patent for discovery

Research taken up as part of the MoU signed

At a joint press conference held on Tuesday, the Vice Chancellor of AU, L. Venugopal Reddy said that the Andhra University (AU) has applied for a patent in USA after about 40 years. This is for an ongoing joint research project with UND Life Sciences of USA that resulted in detection of two enzymes helpful for diagnosing and preventing type 2 diabetes mellitus and Alzheimer's disease.

He congratulated the team comprising experts from AU College of Engineering and UND Life Sciences for their discovery. Both the organizations signed an MoU in December last year. AU College of Engineering Principal Allam Apparao said that the research project was taken up as part of the MoU signed between AU and UND Life Sciences. The project revealed that though patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and Alzheimer's look different and they are characterized with a common abnormality in the form of elevated plasma levels of butyrycholinesterase and acetylcholine terse enzymes.

UN Das of UND Life Sciences said that they are planning further studies to evaluate whether these biomarkers can help in detection of other diseases. He added that they are planning to manufacture and market fully automated kits for easy detection of such diseases. He said that efforts are on to develop and prevention of certain cancer diseases.
