JNTU College of Engineering is the only Engineering College in the Madras State till 1946. The only Engineering colleges during that time are in Coimbatore, Kakinada and Anantapur. The first batch of Engineering students of this college studies in the Guindy college campus in Chennai for the first two years and were shifted to the Anantapur the summer vacation of 1948. The first campus of the college in Anantapur is actually an army battalion that was used during the Second World War. A building for the Engineering was constructed only in 1958. The College is affiliated to Madras University till 1956 and later to Sri Venkateshwara University. The Engineering college got affiliated to JNTU since 1972 when JNTU became the First Technological University in India. The College got Autonomous College status in 2001
