About the course

The Department offers a two-year post-graduate programme leading to the award of M.Sc. degree in Molecular Biology & Biotechnology to the eligible students.

The courses for the first two semesters are designed with an objective to strengthen the basic concepts of Life Sciences with emphasis on helping the students to develop a holistic perspective of life sciences. These courses include Genetics and Cytogenetics, Microbiology, Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Biophysics, Techniques and Instrumentation, Enzymology, Immunology, Molecular Biology and Genetics, Cell and Tissue culture.

The third and fourth semesters offer courses giving in-depth treatment in the areas of Fermentation and Process Control, Genetic Engineering, Management and Legal Issues in Biotechnology. The Department offers three optional courses, viz., Animal Biotechnology, Plant Biotechnology and Food Biotechnology for preferential selection of students. Two credit courses on Spoken English and Remedial mathematics are offered during the first semester and a credit proficiency course chosen from other disciplines are mandatory for the students of the University. Students have to take a compulsory proficiency course in any of the Department other than MBBT and English. There is provision for other remedial courses on specific areas relevant to the programme whenever required. Students are given independent research projects as a prerequisite for their M.Sc. degree.

The department has good laboratory facilities, Computers, Internet and Library facilities. The Department houses a Research Centre for Petroleum Biotechnology.

The Department has close interaction with some of the reputed Institutes and Universities of the country. Major research areas of the Department are

(1) Bioremediatioin and MEOR
(2) Biochemical assessment of snake venome
(3) Plant tissue culture
(4) Isolatioin and characterization of active compounds of medicinal plants
(5) Cell biology
(6) Transgenic bacteria
(7) Malaria parasite.
