Doctoral programme
The Institute imparts long term research training leading to a PhD degree of the Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. Applications for the PhD programme are invited from Indian citizens interested in pursuing scientific career in biological and related sciences. A detailed announcement describing the selection procedure for admission to the PhD programme is displayed on the Institute’s website and advertised in Employment News along with notices in national newspapers in the month of March every year for the academic session that begins in July. Between twelve and twenty-five scholars are admitted to the programme each year, selected on the basis of a national competitive written examination for shortlisting followed by interviews of the shortlisted candidates held at the Institute sometime in June. Minimal academic qualifications required are: MSc or equivalent in any branch of science, or MTech or MBBS or MVSc or MPharm or equivalent, along with a first division or an equivalent grade or at least 60% of aggregate scores in all major examinations from the school finals onwards are required
Short-term training
The Institute enables a limited number of students of postgraduate courses of Indian universities access to its research facilities under the supervision of the Institute’s scientists through: 1) a Summer Training Programme (of at least two months duration - May & June), and 2) research projects towards partial fulfillment of the respective postgraduate degrees (of at least 6 months duration; session I: Jul-Dec; session II: Jan-Jun). The minimal eligibility criterion for admission to these short-term training programmes is a first division or an equivalent grade or at least 60% of aggregate scores in all major examinations from the school finals onwards. Departmental heads are requested to forward applications from interested students for consideration on the basis of available vacancies. The Institute is unable to consider direct applications from the students. The last date for application for the Summer Training Programme is Jan 31. The last dates for application for postgraduate research projects are Jan 31 (for session I) and Jul 31 (for session II).
