About the course

Students admitted to the programme are eligible for the award of M.Sc. degree in Industrial Biotechnology on successful completion of the course.

The Department of Biosciences has a strong research base in Fermentation Technology and Environmental Biotechnology and also runs five other post-graduate courses in Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Botany, Zoology and Microbiology. The DBT-sponsored post-graduate programme in Industrial Biotechnology is spread over four semesters in two years. First three semesters have four theory and two lab courses in each followed by project work in last semester.

Basic training is given in Cell and Molecular Biology; Instrumentation, Computer Applications and Biostatistics; Microbial Biochemistry and Physiology; Chemical Engineering and Thermodynamics of Biological System; Bioprocess and Biochemical Engineering; r-DNA Technology; Transport Processes; Down Stream Processing and Biotechnology Resources Planning and Management of Biotechnology Products. Students have a choice to select elective courses from Protein Engineering and Technology. Analytical Methods in Biotechnology and Bioprocess Control and Animal and Plant Biotechnology in second Semester and elective courses from Environmental Biotechnology Feed and Dairy Technology, Microbial Biotechnology; Modeling and Simulation of Bioprocess; Pharmaceutical Biotechnology and Drug Designing and Bioprocess Plant Design in third Semester. The students are required to give one seminar per semester and have to undertake a project work either in our own laboratories or in other departments or institutions / industry and face viva-voce to defend their work.

The course will be taught by the faculty of the department as well as regular visiting faculty. Department has 20 faculty members actively working on various biotechnology related projects funded by UGC, CSIR, SBT, DST, DNES, NDDB-ICAR, DOE and various industry linked projects in different areas.
